Lionel Messi came out in support of his Barcelona teammate Neymar following the Brazilian's suspension from the Copa America.

Neymar saw his tournament come to an end following a series of incidents after Brazil's 1-0 loss to Colombia.

Messi appreciates the significance of Neymar being banned from the competition and shared his regret over the decision, despite the rivalry between the two players' countries.

"I'm sorry he's no longer in this Copa America," the Argentine told reporters. "Neymar is a friend and I care about him. I'm sorry about the suspension he was given because I believe he is a very important player for Brazil."

Neymar's future participation was jeopardized when he appeared to head-butt an opponent after the final whistle of Brazil's loss, with reports of further aggression taking place afterward in the tunnel.

While Brazil are appealing the decision, Neymar could be on the verge of seeing his second tournament in as many summers end prematurely.

It's the second year in a row in which Neymar saw his tournament come to an end following a match against the South American rivals. Neymar suffered a devastating back injury during the World Cup in Brazil following a violent challenge from Colombia's Juan Zuniga.
