Indiana's Devin Davis suspended for marijuana citation

For players hoping to make it to the pros, college provides a platform for them to showcase their on-court skills. With the NBA's controversial "one-and-done" mandate, now more than ever, players are motivated to maximize their potential in a shorter period of time prior to their transition to the big leagues. Indiana University forward Devin Davis, who is entering his junior year, is running out of time to prove his worth as a NBA prospect.

Indiana announced Tuesday that Davis has been suspended from all basketball activities due to a citation for possession of marijuana. Davis and teammate Hanner Mosquera-Perea were present in an on-campus apartment when University of Indiana police responded to complaints of the smell of marijuana smoke. While Davis received a citation for possession under 30 grams, Mosquera-Perea did not.

This incident does not represent the first hurdle in Davis' collegiate career. Prior to the beginning of the 2014-15 season, Davis was hit by a car driven by then-freshman teammate Emmitt Holt, and was hospitalized with a serious brain injury stemming from the Nov. 1 incident. Davis missed the entire season, and Holt, who was underage, was charged with illegal consumption and was suspended by the team for four games.

Bill Walton, a former No. 1 pick in the 1974 NBA Draft and a UCLA legend, recently debated the NCAA's rules regarding marijuana use. During coverage of an Oregon Ducks game versus the Washington Huskies in February, Walton touched upon the dismissal of UW's sophomore center Robert Upshaw for a violation of team rules. Walton called for the NCAA to update its stance, stating: "You know how I talk every week and complain the NCAA not modernizing the rules? That’s another rule they’ve got to modernize. This whole War on Drugs has been an absolute failure across the board."

As for Davis, Indiana Hoosier representatives have stated that his role with the team will be reviewed.
