Umpire altercation spurs MLB suspension of Blue Jays hitting coach Brook Jacoby

MLB has handed Toronto Blue Jays hitting coach Brook Jacoby a lengthy suspension following an altercation with an umpire in Boston.

MLB's chief baseball officer Joe Torre slapped Jacoby with a 14-game, unpaid suspension after he reportedly initiated contact with an umpire following a game last week against the Red Sox, according to John Lott of the National Post.

Unlike when a player is suspended, Jacoby's ban takes effect immediately even though the Blue Jays have appealed. He will continue to help the team before and after games, but isn't allowed to be in the dugout during games.

The altercation between the Blue Jays' coaching staff and the field crew took place at Fenway Park on April 29.

Given the byzantine design of the park's architecture, the umpires exit the field using the same hallway as the visiting team.

Following the Jays' 4-1 loss to the Red Sox, in which players were upset with the umpiring throughout the game, there was a heated incident between coaches and the umpires.

A source confirmed to Lott that a Jays staffer began yelling at crew chief Bill Miller and umpire Doug Eddings, with the duo proceeding to stop, turn around and continue to fuel the argument.

The umpires claimed in their report that Brook initiated contact of some sort, though the source says the officials did their part to escalate the situation.
