Jets GM Mike Maccagnan speaks on newly acquired running back Zac Stacy

After the St. Louis Rams selected running back Todd Gurley 10th overall in the 2015 NFL Draft, Rams running back Zac Stacy voiced his displeasure on Twitter. Two days later, he was shipped to New York.

With Gurley on board, Stacy would have slid to third on the Rams' depth chart, a proposition he coldly rejected. The 24-year-old now possesses a legitimate opportunity to become the New York Jets starting running back next season, having to fend off Chris Ivory, Stevan Ridley and Bilal Powell for the role.

Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan spoke about his latest acquisition Sunday.

"We thought the idea of bringing Zac in for that kind of investment would be very beneficial and increase the competition at that position," Maccagnan said to ESPN's Rich Cimini. "He's had success in the league. Two years ago, he was close to a 1,000-yard back. This past season, his production wasn't quite as high, but we do think he's a good-caliber running back."

Stacy started the 2014 campaign as the Rams' nominal starter but struggled to make much of an impact, rushing for 293 yards and a touchdown on a 3.9 yards-per-carry average. He was eventually supplanted by rookie Tre Mason.

New York made a number of moves to improve their personnel group in the off-season, and Stacy is presented with a chance to help lead the Jets out of the AFC East basement.
