Snow slows Tigers, Yankees on chilly night at Comerica Park

David Price had long since established himself as one of baseball's premier starters when the Tampa Bay Rays traded him to Detroit last July, but the former Cy Young award encountered a challenge Wednesday he never experienced in his seven years in Florida.

Price, a Tennessee native, was forced to contend with snow flurries Wednesday when the Tigers hosted the New York Yankees at Comerica Park.

The 29-year-old left-hander didn't fare so well in the frigid environment, though, as Price surrendered six runs and unloaded 51 pitches in a disastrous first inning against the Yankees.

Clad in short sleeves, Price frequently blew into his left hand, eager to regain some feeling in his fingers, but consistently fell behind hitters. Price was able to keep the ball in yard, but the Yankees sent 11 hitters to the plate in the 31-minute opening frame, notching five hits while drawing two walks and one hit-by-pitch.

Price's counterpart, however, seemed equally affected by the elements. Making just his sixth career start, Adam Warren needed 36 pitches to make it through the bottom of the first. Much like Price, Warren struggled to command his pitches - he threw only 16 strikes - and allowed four earned runs on two hits and four walks.

Price's outing would end shortly after that laborious first inning, as he allowed two more runs in the second and was removed with one out in the third after yielding eight total runs on 10 hits and three walks.
