Red Sox catcher Vazquez to visit Dr. Andrews for 2nd opinion on elbow

Boston Red Sox catcher Christian Vazquez is scheduled to see Dr. James Andrews on Wednesday for a second opinion on his ailing right elbow, manager John Farrell said Sunday.

It's the latest setback in a series of unsettling developments this weekend regarding Boston's young catcher, who's been bothered by a sore right elbow for the past two weeks. Sunday's reveal is especially concerning given Dr. Andrews' experience with UCL tears and Tommy John surgery.

Vazquez said Saturday that a recent MRI showed "something," though the 24-year-old was unable to elaborate on the extent of the findings.

"I'm waiting. I'm waiting," Vazquez said. "I don't have the answer yet. I’m waiting. Maybe tomorrow - I don't know. I'm waiting right now. They don't know yet. They told me they found something, but I'm looking for a second opinion. They hope it’s not bad."

Farrell also declined to fuel worst-case scenarios Sunday, telling reporters, "I don't know the severity of it right now."

Vazquez is slated to be the starting catcher for the Red Sox this season, however, his status for Opening Day now appears to be in jeopardy. Ryan Hanigan is expected to fulfill the No. 1 catcher role in Vazquez's absence.
