Tigers, Price 'feeling out' each other in preliminary extension talks

The Detroit Tigers are beginning their push to lock up a key member of their starting rotation.

David Price's agent, Bo McKinnis, has opened preliminary discussions with the club regarding a long-term extension for his client, but Tigers fans shouldn't get too excited just yet.

"I wouldn't even call it groundwork, Price told MLB.com's Jason Beck. "I wouldn't even say groundwork is being laid."

Price described the meeting between Tigers brass and his agent as the two sides "feeling out" each other.

General manager Dave Dombrowski has previously expressed his desire to lock up Price, who will be a free agent at season's end, to a long-term deal.

Price went 15-12 with a 3.26 ERA and recorded a league-high 271 strikeouts in 34 starts split between the Tampa Bay Rays and Tigers last season.
