Maple Leafs' Kadri will miss next 2 games for disciplinary reasons

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Nazem Kadri will not play in the club's next two games.

Team president Brendan Shanahan announced the move Wednesday, citing disciplinary reasons for the decision.

"There comes a point where you've got to grow up," Shanahan told reporters. "He understands our decision and incidents like this won't be tolerated."

Head coach Peter Horachek sent Kadri home Sunday and made him a healthy scratch Monday after the forward missed a team meeting and arrived late to practice.

"There's more to this (than being late for Sunday's practice)," Shanahan said. "There's a history here."

Kadri will miss Wednesday's home game against the Buffalo Sabres and Friday's contest in Calgary against the Flames.

"The easiest thing to do would be to sweep this under the rug," Shanahan said. "We would not be doing Naz a service if we did that."

The team president said the decision was made in conjunction with the coaching staff, adding that it should serve as a wake-up call for Kadri.

"This is a moment when a player has to look in the mirror and make some decisions. We like Nazem Kadri ... It's time for him to start making better decisions."

Kadri will not be made available to the media Wednesday.

Maple Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf would not reveal what he told Kadri, but said the team wants what's best for him.

"We're going to support Naz through this situation," Phaneuf said.
