Report: Pirates willing to pay $25 million-plus per year to extend McCutchen's contract beyond 2018

Pittsburgh Pirates owner Bob Nutting really likes Andrew McCutchen, and for good reason.

McCutchen's current six-year, $51.5-million deal is an absolute bargain considering the staggering numbers the 28-year-old has put up over the past three seasons, and Nutting is willing to show his appreciation by opening his wallet to make him a Pirate for life, reports the Pittsburgh Tribune's Rob Biertempfel.

The team is willing to pay $25 million-plus per year for the outfielder's services beyond 2018, and that's music to McCutchen's ears.

"If that happens, that will be something we'll talk about," McCutchen said. "Right now, I'm not too worried about it. It's nothing that I'm thinking about, really. If it happens, that would be great. I look forward to it if they do that."

McCutchen's deal runs through the 2017 season and the team has a $14.75-million option for 2018. The team has not engaged in extension talks with the 2013 National League MVP to this point , however, according to Biertempfel.

The four-time All-Star has also proven to be incredibly durable early in his career, hitting the disabled list only once in his first six seasons.

McCutchen hit .314 with 25 home runs and 83 RBIs while adding 18 steals in 146 games for the Bucs last season.
