Dr. James Andrews: Todd Gurley's knee is ahead of schedule

Famed sports medicine expert Dr. James Andrews, who repaired Georgia running back Todd Gurley's ACL, said Gurley's recovery is ahead of schedule, and reports of the running back fearing medical exams on his knee are unfounded.

A report emerged Friday suggesting Gurley didn't allow NFL doctors at the scouting combine to examine his knee.

"I heard some fuss that Gurley wouldn't let teams examine him and that's just totally misleading," Andrews said, according to ESPN's Chris Mortensen. "The team physicians I have spoken with who are there - and I have spoken to a bunch of them - were all happy about what they saw. I mean, they're smart enough to know you can't have 32 teams pulling and tugging on a knee just three-and-a-half months removed from surgery. But the doctors I spoke with said he looked great and I'd say he's probably six weeks ahead with his recovery."

Mortensen cited one team doctor as saying the expectation is Gurley will be able to fully play the game only nine months after surgery because his injury was relatively uncomplicated.

Andrews said he examined Gurley before the combine and liked what he saw.

"Gurley's quad muscle is way ahead of what you would expect even at this stage and that's vital to a good recovery, as you know."

Gurley is expected to submit to team medical exams closer to the draft.
