Trade deadline: 5 players expected to be on the move

Rick Osentoski / USA TODAY Sports

The National Hockey League's annual trade deadline is less than two weeks away, and while a couple of major deals have already been announced, there's no shortage of notable names on the market.

Here are five players expected to be moved on or before March 2.

Coyotes F Antoine Vermette

An unrestricted free agent at season's end, and seemingly in line for a large payday this summer, Vermette's versatile, two-way game will be coveted by teams with Stanley Cup aspirations and a hole at center.

The Arizona Coyotes are in rebuild mode and likely aren't looking to ante up to retain the 32-year-old center's services, making him as good a bet as any to be traded.

The only hiccup may be the asking price of a first-round pick and a prospect, which may have to be amended in order for a deal to come to fruition.

Potential destination: Montreal

Devils F Jaromir Jagr

The legendary forward is making no bones about his desire to be moved to a contender, recently questioning why the New Jersey Devils would even consider keeping him.

It's a fair question for a club with virtually no chance of making the playoffs.

The seemingly ageless Jagr clearly still has gas left in the tank, recording 35 goals and 61 assists in 134 games with the Devils dating back to the beginning of last season.

He's probably also looking to redeem himself after failing to score a single goal during the Boston Bruins' run to the Cup Final in 2013.

Potential destination: Washington

Hurricanes D Andrej Sekera

Perhaps the most sought-after defenseman on the market, Sekera is another soon-to-be unrestricted free agent very likely to be moved.

Sekera has recorded only two goals and 17 assists in 54 games on the Carolina Hurricanes' blue line this season, but is coming off a 44-point season and, at age 28, is looking for a new deal in the prime of his career.

He's simply too valuable not to be acquired by a team with championship asiprations.

Potential destination: Los Angeles

Maple Leafs F Daniel Winnik

The Toronto Maple Leafs have already begun the selling process, and will look to cash in by dumping Winnik's expiring contract to a willing buyer.

An effective depth forward with a strong two-way game, Winnik is the kind of bottom-six player that can fill a defensive role while chipping in the odd point.

While they're also believed to be trying to move Tyler Bozak, Winnik is the best bet to be traded by the Maple Leafs prior to the deadline. Toronto is reportedly seeking a pair of draft picks or a pick and a prospect in exchange for Winnik.

Potential destination: Winnipeg

Oilers D Jeff Petry

The Edmonton Oilers appear set to cash in on a demand for right-handed defensemen, and Petry's own agent has come out and said he expects his client to be moved.

Another unrestricted free agent at season's end, Petry is a big, puck-moving player that could slide nicely into a contending team's top four.

His agent has indicated that clubs are calling to see whether his client would be willing to sign an extension if acquired, which could raise the stakes in the pursuit.

Either way, Petry appears on the verge of escaping Edmonton's perpetual rebuild.

Potential destination: Detroit
