David Price 'open' to extension with Tigers

David Price suggested Thursday he's finally comfortable with his new surroundings in Detroit, roughly six months after being traded to the Tigers from the Tampa Bay Rays, the organization that selected him first overall in the 2007 draft.

"This is not somewhere that I disliked," Price told MLB.com's Jason Beck. "I only said that it was different, and it's not different anymore. It's more normal now, knowing all the guys, knowing all the coaches, knowing everybody's name and stuff like that."

Price, a four-time All-Star, is poised to become a free agent next winter, but the talented left-hander would consider an extension with the Tigers now that he's acclimatized himself to Detroit. The 29-year-old didn't deny, however, that free agency wields considerable appeal, as well.

"I'm open for anything, to be honest," he said. "But once you have - I guess I'm about a week short of six years in the big leagues right now - to get that far along in the process, some of you does kind of want to wait it out, but then some of you feels like, 'Well, if they're open to doing something, you can't close any doors.' That's the way I feel. I enjoy it here. I enjoy the staff and the guys and the stadium, everything of that nature. …

"I've been doing this for a while. To get to that point where you can have your place to play, have your choice to pick where you want to play, this would definitely be on the list."

Price remains among the game's elite starters, accumulating more wins above replacement over the last three seasons than all but five pitchers. The Vanderbilt product leads all starters with a 6.49 strikeout-to-walk ratio since 2013, managing a 3.29 ERA (2.88 FIP) across 61 starts over that span.

Should Price continue to dominate in 2015, he'd likely be poised to a receive a contract similar to the seven-year, $210-million deal Max Scherzer signed with the Washington Nationals earlier this week.
