Report: Rangers, Marc Staal agree to 6-year, $34.2-million extension
The New York Rangers have reportedly agreed to a six-year contract extension with defenseman Marc Staal.
The two sides were making progress on Friday morning and reached an agreement in principle in the afternoon, Larry Brooks of the New York Post reports.
Staal's new contract will pay him $34.2 million over six seasons with an annual cap hit of $5.7 million, according to both Brooks and TSN's Bob McKenzie.
The deal reportedly includes a full no-movement clause for the first three seasons, followed by a modified no-trade clause for the final three.
"This is where I want to be. It’s been the goal the whole time," Staal told reporters after the Rangers' 2-1 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday night.
"It was handled professionally on both sides," Staal said. "I wanted to get it done early, but with the cap it’s not easy to make decisions about salaries and what to do moving forward."
The blue-liner has spent his entire eight-year career with the Rangers after being selected 12th overall by the club in 2005.
