Report: Royals' Davis, Holland attracting trade interest

Joy R. Absalon / USA TODAY Sports

The Kansas City Royals' improbable postseason run, guided by their dominant bullpen, has thrown some intriguing names into the trade market.

Setup man Wade Davis and closer Greg Holland have attracted interest, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, and it's possible the Royals could opt to trade one of them for a hitter.

In his first full season as a reliever, Davis posted a 1.00 ERA and 0.84 WHIP while striking out 109 in 72 innings. The right-hander finished eighth in Cy Young voting. Davis is set to earn $7 million in 2015 with a pair of team options for the following two seasons.

Holland emerged as one of the best closers in the majors over the past two seasons. The right-hander has posted 93 saves since 2013, while boasting a 1.32 ERA and 193 strikeouts in 129 1/3 innings. Holland, who earned $4.67 million last season, is arbitration eligible for the second time this offseason and is projected to earn $9.3 million, according to MLB Trade Rumors

As it stands now, the Royals bullpen is overcrowded. The team already re-signed Luke Hochevar and Jason Frasor and could move either to make room for rookie Brandon Finnegan.

The Royals finished last in the majors with 95 home runs a season ago and could benefit by using their additional bullpen depth to acquire much-needed power. That need became even more pronounced after designated hitter Billy Butler signed with the Oakland Athletics.
