Rivers stars in Chargers' victory over winless Jaguars

Quarterback Philip Rivers' excellent start to the season continued as he led the San Diego Chargers to a 33-14 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.

The Jaguars were competitive early, trailing 17-14 at halftime. After the break, it was a different story, as the Chargers scored 16 unanswered points to leave Jacksonville still searching for its first win.

Here's what you need to know...

  • Rivers had an outstanding game, going 29-of-39 for 377 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. The Chargers pivot has now thrown nine touchdowns versus one interception through four games this year.
  • The Jaguars fumbled on the first play of the game, but the Chargers failed to capitalize on the turnover. 
  • Chargers wide receiver Eddie Royal had a fantastic first half, scoring touchdowns on 43- and 47-yard passes. Royal ended up with five catches for 105 yards, while Keenan Allen led the team with 10 receptions and 135 yards.
  • Despite recording the win, the Chargers' running game was practically non-existent - Branden Oliver's 23 yards on nine carries led San Diego in rushing.
  • After giving up a league-high 17 sacks in their first three games, the Jaguars' offensive line continued to struggle in pass protection, allowing three sacks on Sunday.
  • Philip Rivers set a Chargers record by throwing a touchdown pass in 24 consecutive games.
  • Jaguars receiver Cecil Shorts III left the game with a hamstring injury and did not return. Shorts caught two passes for 25 yards.
