Stafford carves up Jets secondary in Lions win

Detroit Lions superstar wideout Calvin Johnson was active for Sunday's game against the New York Jets, but an ankle injury had him operating at less than full strength. Quarterback Matthew Stafford did just fine without him.

Stafford completed 24-of-34 passes for 293 yards, throwing for two scores and running in another as the Lions improved to 3-1 with a 24-17 win over the Jets. The Jets lost their third straight to fall to 1-3 on the year.

Box Score | Fantasy Pulse

  • Johnson was used sparingly in the Lions offense Sunday, catching just two passes for 12 yards. It was the first game where Johnson hauled in fewer than three passes since 2010.
  • Stafford abused the Jets secondary (which lost Calvin Pryor in the first half after starting the game without Dee Milliner), involving eight Lions receivers. Golden Tate was his top target, catching eight passes for 116 yards.
  • The Lions secondary, on the other hand, limited the Jets' air attack, forcing quarterback Geno Smith into an inefficient 17-for-33 with 209 yards and two fourth-quarter turnovers.
  • Smith's struggles prompted chants of "We want Vick" throughout MetLife Stadium after Smith's league-leading fifth interception.
  • Jets running back Chris Ivory followed up a pair of subpar efforts with an 84-yard performance on a season-high 17 carries.
  • Backup running back Chris Johnson was limited to just six carries, but a late fourth-quarter 35-yard run resulted in his first rushing touchdown of the season.
  • The Lions, staked to an early 17-3 lead at the half, held off a late run by the Jets after losing running backs Joique Bell and Theo Riddick to injuries.
