Jermain Defoe will not be sold by Toronto FC

Tom Szczerbowski-USA TODAY Sports

It's a bloody big sigh of relief for Toronto.

Jermain Defoe has been linked with a move away from the club since the firing of manager Ryan Nelsen on Sunday, at which point reports began to emerge that the English striker had grown disillusioned with the project in Toronto.

TFC general manager Tim Bezbatchenko confirmed Sunday that the club did receive an offer for Defoe, and reports were swirling on Monday claiming that as many as four Premier League clubs were looking to bring the striker back to his homeland.

QPR was the side most commonly linked with a bid.

Defoe, who is expected to be out until the end of the month with a right adductor strain, leads Toronto with 11 goals on the season, and should this latest report prove to be true, his return will provide a massive boost for the club as they look to secure a first-ever playoff spot.
