Patrik Laine went into self-deprecation mode when asked about Alex Ovechkin's big goal after Monday night's game.

"I was pretty close watching it," the young Winnipeg Jets star told reporters postgame, according to Isabelle Khurshudyan of The Washington Post. "I was in a good spot. Just behind him. I was there when he made history, so I can maybe watch that someday and show that I was there getting the minus on the ice."

Ovechkin notched what was his second goal of the game and the 600th of his career early in the second period of Monday's 3-2 overtime win.

Laine scored one of his own in the third, pulling back within one of Ovechkin for the league lead on the season after both players entered the matchup knotted at 40 apiece.

The 19-year-old finished the highly anticipated contest with the worst even-strength Corsi For percentage of any Jets skater at 35.29, according to hockeystats.ca.

He finished with four shots on goal, two blocked shots, one giveaway, and two takeaways while logging 18:48 in ice time.
