Orlando pens Toia to 3-year contract extension

Orlando City announced Thursday the club has signed Donny Toia to a three-year contract extension including options, penning the 24-year-old after making just a pair of appearances for his new club.

Toia only recently joined the Lions after Jason Kreis' side acquired him in the offseason by way of Atlanta United, who selected him out of the Montreal Impact in the 2016 Expansion Draft. In exchange, Orlando sent Atlanta its natural 2017 SuperDraft first-round pick.

With Brek Shea traded to the Vancouver Whitecaps, Orlando general manager Niki Budalic opted to make secure the left-back's future status post-haste.

"Given he was in the last year of his contract, securing Donny to a new contract was an offseason priority for us," Budalic said in a club-issued statement. "His experience, versatility and work ethic are important assets that will help solidify our back line. He’s come in and had an immediate impact and we look forward to his contributions over the long-term."

Prior to joining Orlando, Toia had made 79 regular and postseason appearances in MLS, having joined the league in 2011 with Real Salt Lake as a Homegrown Player, the first in club history. He now reunites with head coach Jason Kreis in Orlando.
