Tigers' Martinez set for more tests on ailing foot

Since sustaining a mid-foot sprain Saturday, Detroit Tigers right fielder J.D. Martinez has undergone X-rays and an MRI, and the 29-year-old is now scheduled to have a stress CT scan on Friday in Charlotte, reports MLB.com's Jason Beck.

The X-rays taken immediately after Martinez injured his foot in an exhibition against the Miami Marlins at Joker Merchant Stadium revealed no structural damage, though the club is still waiting for the MRI results to be examined by a specialist.

On Monday, as the club awaited word, manager Brad Ausmus said he didn't feel Martinez's situation was bleak, and his cautious optimism didn't wane even after the Tigers opted to send the one-time All-Star for further testing.

"My optimism has not changed," Ausmus said, noting the club has not yet discussed how they would fill the void in right field should Martinez miss time.

Martinez, a free agent next winter, is 8-for-37 (.216) with two home runs, three doubles, and a 29.6 percent strikeout rate in 15 Grapefruit League games this spring. Last year, after earning his lone All-Star berth in 2015, Martinez hit .307/.373/.535 with 22 homers and 35 doubles in 120 games, missing roughly six weeks with an elbow injury.
