Noah Syndergaard, one of the game's best pitchers and brightest stars, will make a modest $605,500 in 2017, according to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports.

The New York Mets renewed the ace's contract at that salary Friday, giving them another year of cheap control over the flamethrower. Syndergaard, who authored a 2.60 ERA over 183 2/3 innings in the regular season last year, will be arbitration-eligible for the first time next season.

The practice of renewing young stars' contracts for low salaries is nothing new, and the Boston Red Sox renewed All-Star outfielder Mookie Betts' contract Thursday for $905,000.

Syndergaard, 24, has already been named the Mets' starter for Opening Day.
