This week's winners and losers in the golf world

It didn't look promising or possible to get the Genesis Open in, let alone 72-holes heading into the weekend. Los Angeles was hit hard by flash flooding and high winds on Friday, but the grounds crew, volunteers, and officials were on the scene early Saturday morning getting the course ready. The event not only finished, but ended on Sunday evening - pleasing everyone.

PGA Tour officials

Like the athletes that make a living playing the game, the PGA Tour officials are the best at what they do. The Tour had the foresight to enact lift, clean, and place for the second round - knowing that players were going to play Friday and Saturday under wet conditions. Officials then reverted back to playing the ball as it lies for the final two rounds, with all golfers under the same setup. These guys need to run the four majors too, especially the U.S. Open.

Old-style golf courses

Seriously, what's not to like about tracks like Riviera? Not the longest course ever built by any means, but still standing up to time and the world's best. The club ticks all the boxes when designing a golf course.

Dustin Johnson

What a week for Dustin Johnson:

  • Won the Genesis Open
  • Moved to No. 1 in world rankings
  • 10th consecutive year with at least one victory on the PGA Tour
  • Lead the field in driving distance, GIR, birdies and total shots gained
  • Fiancee Paulina Gretzky announced the couple is expecting their second child

Losers:

Bryson DeChambeau and Bubba Watson

Both withdrew Friday, after play was suspended due to inclement weather. DeChambeau pulled out after 28 holes of play, reportedly citing a bad hand. The move drew the ire of Grayson Murray, who also missed the cut.

Watson had two holes left and was going to miss the cut, but gave no explanation as to why he withdrew, giving us another solid Bubba moment. Classy move from the defending champion.

Lack of Sunday drama

For the second straight week, the final round was a runaway. Last week at Pebble Beach, Jordan Spieth smashed the field by four and was never challenged over the last 18 holes. It happened again at Riviera, with Johnson cruising to victory by five shots. The chase for second place became the tournament within the tournament. All credit to Spieth and Johnson though.

A little early, Wesley. It'll look fantastic on the first Saturday in May for the Kentucky Derby, though.
