Report: Talks heating up between Ross, Rangers

Chris Humphreys / USA TODAY Sports

The Texas Rangers might be on the verge of adding another former San Diego Padres starter to their rotation.

After signing Andrew Cashner this offseason to a one-year, $10-million deal, the club is being aggressive in its pursuit of right-hander Tyson Ross and talks appear to be heating up, according to TR Sullivan of MLB.com.

Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports notes that Ross' decision between six teams could come soon, while Yahoo's Jeff Passan adds that the Rangers and Chicago Cubs are the favorites to land the righty.

Ross missed essentially all of last season with thoracic outlet syndrome - an injury relating to the neck and shoulder. He was granted free agency by the Padres and has since gauged significant interest from a handful of teams on the open market.

The Rangers - a team supposedly strapped for cash with limited available payroll - could be looking to sign Ross on a risk-free one-year deal to see what the 29-year-old has to offer. The club also lost two starters from last season's rotation in the forms of Colby Lewis and Derek Holland.

Despite the injury history, Ross proved to be a viable asset pitching for the Padres. From 2013-15, the right-hander started 80 games combining to a 3.07 ERA, an impressive 3.13 FIP, and 9.2 strikeouts per nine innings.
