Report: Nationals willing to talk to Baker about extension

Dusty Baker can begin to breathe a little easier about his future.

The Washington Nationals are reportedly open to discussing a contract extension with Baker that would keep him with the club past the 2017 season, according to The Washington Post's Jorge Castillo.

Though both sides have yet to begin talks, Baker isn't sweating his club's eventual decision.

"I don’t know," he said. "Tell you the truth, the way I look at it - between my family, my hunger, between, you know, the prayers that I send up looking for answers and looking for clues - it will come to me, you know? Some of it's in your control, and some of it's out of your control.

"If it was in my control, I wouldn't have been out two years in the first place, but you can't hire yourself."

Baker had an impressive debut campaign with the Nationals in 2016 that earned him a third-place finish in voting for the NL Manager of the Year award. The skipper led his club to 95 wins last season - 12 better than their 2015 mark - and helped them secure a spot in the NLDS against the Los Angeles Dodgers, though they were eliminated in five games.

He signed a two-year, $4-million contract with Washington in November 2015.
