Fans might want to hold off on selling those Pittsburgh Pirates jerseys with Andrew McCutchen's name on the back.

With rumors swirling that McCutchen's time in Pittsburgh could be coming to an end, the club isn't compelled to trade the 30-year-old center fielder unless the return is sufficient, a member of the Pirates organization said to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports.

The speculative leader in the sweepstakes to acquire McCutchen are the Washington Nationals, who have a need in the outfield and possess a number of young assets, including outfielder Victor Robles and pitcher Lucas Giolito, who entered the season as baseball's top prospect.

McCutchen's future has been a topic of conversation since the offseason began, especially with general manager Neal Huntington adding fuel to the fire when he admitted the team could make "unpopular decisions."

Any McCutchen trade would signal a rebuild, as the the club has seen a number of important players dealt or let go in the past year including Neil Walker, Mark Melancon, and Francisco Liriano.

McCutchen, the 2013 NL MVP, is coming off the worst statistical season of his career, hitting .256/.336/.430 while seeing his WAR dip each year since 2013, from 8.1 to 6.3 to 4.9 and ultimately to -0.7 last season.
