Charlie Strong: 'I want to come back'

It's a press conference many were waiting for after Texas lost to Kansas on Saturday for the first time since 1938.

Reports surfaced Sunday that head coach Charlie Strong was fired, only to be retracted. Strong held his weekly presser on Monday and discussed what he told his players.

"Don't worry about me, no reason to worry about me," Strong said. "We have one game left, and it's important that we go play this game and we go play this game for our seniors because they deserve to go to a bowl game."

The Longhorns are 5-6 on the season after Saturday's loss, pushing Strong's record in Austin to 16-20 over his three years.

Following a discussion with athletic director Mike Perrin, Strong said: "I've been told we'll be evaluated at the end of the season. After the last game against TCU, a decision will be made."

“Next year, I want to come back,” he added. “I look at the job this staff has done and look at the players they’ve put in place. The wins and losses, they don’t stack up, but still, you’re looking at a young football team, a team that when you get everything back in place for the coming year has a lot of talent," he said according to Chris Vannini of coachingsearch.com.

Earlier there were reports that many of the young players on the Longhorns were threatening to boycott the game against the Horned Frogs, but Strong refuted the idea of that.

"That won't happen. They won't boycott this game. This game is about the seniors."

With the Longhorn network replaying the Kansas game from Saturday just prior to taking the microphone Monday, Strong still showed a sense of humor.
