Smart's status for Celtics' opener unknown

Boston Celtics president Danny Ainge said Thursday that point guard Marcus Smart has not been ruled out of Wednesday's season opener against the Brooklyn Nets.

"We don't know enough to determine whether he'll be ready to play opening night or how long he'll be out," Ainge told 98.5 The Hub's Toucher and Rich. "Obviously we'll be very careful with him ... over the next few days we'll have a little bit better of an indication on Marcus' ankle and how much it swelled."

Smart left the Celtics' preseason finale Wednesday after spraining his left ankle. An initial report said he could miss a couple of weeks, but Ainge wouldn't confirm that.

"It didn't seem to be a terrible one, but he was in some pain so it's a little bit concerning," Ainge said.

Now heading into his third NBA season, Smart has previously missed time due to left ankle and left leg injuries.
