Fraser Forster has suffered an arm injury in England training, ruling him out of the beginning of his country's 2018 World Cup qualification campaign as he returns to Southampton for treatment, reports BBC Sport and The Telegraph's John Percy.

The Three Lions travel to Slovakia on Sunday to start the reign of Sam Allardyce, but Forster's unfortunate ailment means that duties between the sticks will likely remain with Joe Hart, who left Manchester City for a season-long loan with Torino on Wednesday.

Following another fine season with Southampton and Hart's mishaps at Euro 2016, The Telegraph's Jason Burt understood Forster, 28, was going to be handed a starting berth for Allardyce's first match at the helm. Instead, it will be Hart and Burnley's Tom Heaton vying for a spot in the first XI.

It lands a blow to Forster's hopes of looting the No. 1 shirt from Hart amid his troubles at club level, with the former Celtic shot-stopper's six international caps all coming in non-competitive action thus far.
