LA Galaxy's Zardes out for regular season with broken foot

Reuters

The LA Galaxy announced Tuesday that forward Gyasi Zardes has been ruled out for the remainder of the 2016 MLS regular season after breaking the fifth metatarsal bone in his right foot.

Zardes, 24, suffered the injury Saturday during a 0-0 draw against the Vancouver Whitecaps. While the Galaxy didn't give a firm timeline for his return, the club ruled him out for the rest of the regular season, which concludes Oct. 23.

Zardes has made 19 appearances this season with the five-time MLS Cup champions, scoring six goals and recording five assists. The U.S. men's national team regular was also a part of Jurgen Klinsmann's team for the 2016 Copa America Centenario.

His absence will certainly be felt by the Galaxy, sitting fourth in the Western Conference, as they look to secure a playoff berth with less than 10 matches remaining in the season.

Head coach Bruce Arena will likely look to Sebastian Lletget and Emmanuel Boateng as possible replacements, though the Galaxy's midfield shape is looking to change even further as Nigel De Jong reportedly approaches an exit to Galatasaray as well.
