Report: Eric Berry to end holdout, rejoin Chiefs on Sunday

The Kansas City Chiefs won't be without their star safety for much longer.

After missing all of training camp and the first three preseason games, Eric Berry will end his franchise tag holdout and report to the team early next week, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

More specifically, NFL Network's Rand Getlin adds, Berry is expected to arrive Sunday.

The reports come as a follow-up to Andy Reid's appearance on PFT Live on Friday, where the veteran head coach hinted that Berry would be in the lineup Week 1.

"Eric's one of our good players and he's in the business side of it right now," Reid said. "This is all part of the profession, so I get it. But I also know when he comes in he's going to be in great shape, he'll be able to get himself back before the first game and be ready to go because that's the way he trains in the offseason and the kind of shape he keeps himself in."

Given that he's still yet to sign the franchise tag, Berry isn't subject to any sort of fines for his missed time throughout the summer. Indeed, signing the $10.8-million tender upon making his return will also see him receive the weekly $645,647 he would have sacrificed were his holdout to carry over into the regular season.

Berry should immediately step back into a lead role in the Kansas City secondary as he looks to build upon an incredible 2015 season that followed a battle with cancer.

The 27-year-old, who first landed with the Chiefs as a first-round pick in 2010, earned Pro Bowl and First-Team All-Pro honors after racking up 61 tackles, two interceptions, and 10 passes defensed.

Kansas City will presumably look to reopen negotiations on a long-term contract before Berry hits the open market in March.
