Nola done for season after UCL sprain diagnosis

Philadelphia Phillies starter Aaron Nola will miss the rest of the 2016 season, as the right-hander was placed on the 60-day disabled list Wednesday after being diagnosed with a mild sprain in his ulnar collateral ligament and a mild flexor strain.

Nola, who received a platelet-rich plasma injection Monday, expects to avoid Tommy John surgery following four weeks of rest, and is optimistic about attending spring training with the club in 2017.

"At this time nobody is talking about surgery," Phillies general manager Matt Klentak said, according to MLB.com's Todd Zolecki.

In a corresponding roster move, Philadelphia selected the contract of right-hander Frank Herrmann from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Top pitching prospect Jake Thompson, who was called up in early August, is expected to continue taking Nola's spot in the rotation.
