Phillies to promote top pitching prospect Thompson
Jake Thompson is set to finally make his MLB debut.
The Philadelphia Phillies will give their top pitching prospect his first major-league start this weekend, as manager Pete Mackanin revealed the 22-year-old will start Saturday against the San Diego Padres, according to Matt Breen of Philly.com.
"I know he's got major-league stuff and I'm anxious to see him perform," Mackanin said Thursday. "We'll find out Saturday. It's his debut. I don't know what to expect."
The young right-hander has been dominant this season with Triple-A Lehigh Valley, registering a 2.50 ERA and crafting a 1.10 WHIP in 21 starts. He will replace starter Aaron Nola - on the 15-day disabled list with a right elbow strain - in the Phillies' rotation.
Thompson was acquired by the Phillies at last season's trade deadline as part of a deal with the Texas Rangers for starter Cole Hamels.
