49ers' Thad Lewis out for season with torn ACL

San Francisco 49ers backup quarterback Thad Lewis suffered a torn ACL on Sunday and will be out for the season, head coach Chip Kelly told reporters Monday.

The 28-year-old was projected to be the team's third quarterback behind Blaine Gabbert and Colin Kaepernick. He was signed to a one-year contract in March after one-year stints on the sidelines with the Philadelphia Eagles and Houston Texans.

The journeyman last saw the field as a member of the Buffalo Bills in 2013, when he played in six games - starting five - and racked up over 1,000 passing yards, four touchdowns, and three interceptions.

Jeff Driskel will take over as the team's No. 3 quarterback.
