The New York Jets placed defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson on the physically unable to perform list to start training camp, the team announced Thursday.

Wilkerson starting the summer on the sidelines was to be expected, as he's spent the entire offseason working his way back from a broken leg suffered in Week 17.

While getting back on the practice field in time for some preseason reps would be ideal for his preparation, the priority will continue to be getting him healthy in time for the 2016 opener.

New York shocked the football world earlier this month by striking a megadeal with Wilkerson ahead of the deadline to sign franchise-tagged players. With his long-term security taken care of, he now returns to lead what should once again be one of the NFL's most dominant defensive fronts.

Also starting camp on the PUP list are wide receiver Devin Smith, running back Khiry Robinson, guard James Carpenter, tackle Breno Giacomini, and cornerback Kendall James.
