On the same night that Aroldis Chapman tied his own record for the fastest pitch ever recorded by Statcast, an unheralded rookie came ever so close to matching the New York Yankees flame-thrower.

Atlanta Braves right-hander Mauricio Cabrera had fans at Great American Ball Park rubbing their eyes in disbelief Monday night when he fired a 103.8-mph fastball past Cincinnati Reds outfielder Tyler Holt. The pitch was the fastest in the Statcast era thrown by someone not named Aroldis Chapman.

Incredibly, it's not even the first time this season the 22-year-old has hit 103 on the radar gun.

"When you're toting 100-something around, it's a pretty good weapon," Braves manager Brian Snitker told reporters after his team's 8-2 loss.

The Braves' season may be all but finished, but Cabrera's opened eyes with his powerful fastball and excellent work out of the bullpen. Since being recalled in late June, he owns a 2.16 ERA, four strikeouts, and two saves over 8 1/3 innings.
