Arsenal has to stump up €94 million (£80 million) if it's to prize Gonzalo Higuain away from Napoli.

Numerous reports on Tuesday stated that the Gunners are set for discussions with the Argentinian's representatives, but a source has told BBC Sport's Saj Chowdhury that Arsene Wenger's side will have to meet a lofty fee in order to complete a transfer.

"There are no direct offers," said the insider.

"Only by meeting the release clause of €94.376 million will the player leave Napoli. Otherwise Higuain will stay for the remaining two years of his deal."

The 28-year-old striker won Serie A's golden boot in the 2015-16 season with a superb 36 strikes in just 35 starts, so has been identified by Wenger as a player who can alleviate the goal-scoring burden on the inconsistent Olivier Giroud.

Higuain has a penchant for finding the back of the net, as demonstrated in his previous spells at River Plate and Real Madrid, and while on international duty. He was subject to criticism while representing La Albiceleste recently, however, when he missed a gilt-edged chance in the Copa America Centenario final defeat to Chile.

At an asking price of €94 million, Higuain would cost a similar amount to what Real Madrid paid for Cristiano Ronaldo in 2009.

Napoli appears to be fairly active in this summer transfer window. It's linked with Sunderland's pint-sized winger Emanuele Giaccherini, and is trying to hold onto defender Kalidou Koulibaly, who's apparently wanted by Chelsea and Everton.

Centre-back Lorenzo Tonelli has already been signed from Empoli at an estimated cost of €10 million.
