Report: Cavaliers expected to meet with Wade
The Cleveland Cavaliers are expected to meet with unrestricted free agent Dwyane Wade "soon," the Akron Beacon Journal's Jason Lloyd reported early Tuesday evening, citing league sources.
It is difficult to deduce if there is any real chance of Wade joining the Cavs, or if the 12-time All-Star is merely using close friend LeBron James' team as leverage against the Miami Heat. Rumors - varying in veracity - of a potential reunion of the future Hall of Famers have swirled since James left Miami in 2014.
Wade is at a contract impasse with the Heat, with the current mood called "ugly" by multiple sources on each side. Miami is reportedly offering two years and $40 million for the 34-year-old franchise legend, with Wade's reported counteroffer varying depending on the source.
One thing is for certain: As currently constructed, the Cavaliers do not have much to offer Wade outside the mid-level exception of $3.5 million.
Wade has in the past taken "hometown discounts" with the Heat - including when James signed there in 2010 - but made it clear when he was also a free agent last summer that the practice was a thing of the past.
It's worth noting that James remains a free agent himself, and it remains to be seen whether he's willing to take a financial haircut like the one Wade did in Miami given the circumstances.
