Angels' Cron makes history with 6-hit, 5-RBI, 5-run performance
Nearly 37,000 people packed themselves into Fenway Park on Saturday night hoping to see a baseball game. What transpired was a demolition derby, with Los Angeles Angels first baseman C.J. Cron leading the charge.
After smacking a grand slam in Friday's controversial loss, Cron's big series continued into Saturday's 21-2 shellacking of the Red Sox, with the 26-year-old going 6-for-6 with a pair of homers while becoming just the fifth player in history - and the first Angels player ever - to manage at least six hits, five runs batted in, and five runs scored in a game.
Inning | Result | Pitcher | RBI? |
---|---|---|---|
2nd | Single | Clay Buchholz | 0 |
4th | Home run | Clay Buchholz | 1 |
5th | Single | Heath Hembree | 2 |
7th | Single | Robbie Ross Jr. | 0 |
7th | Home run | Pat Light | 2 |
9th | Double | Ryan LaMarre | 0 |
No player has accomplished that feat since May 23, 2002, when Los Angeles Dodgers right fielder Shawn Green went 6-for-6 with four homers and seven RBIs in an 16-3 drubbing of the Milwaukee Brewers. Since 2010, only three other players - Charlie Blackmon, Alex Rios, and Jean Segura - have managed six-hit games.
Amazingly, though, Cron wasn't the only player to record five-plus hits in Saturday's lopsided affair. Carlos Perez, who took the field with a .186 average and .510 OPS, also went 5-for-5 with a home run while establishing a career-high with six RBIs, too. Only once before have the Angels had two players record at least five hits in the same game (Randy Velarde and Mo Vaughan on June 24, 1999).
