Report: Rangers hot on trail for Rays' Moore

Denny Medley / USA TODAY Sports

The American League-leading Texas Rangers are looking for help for their banged up rotation, and it's a left-hander in Southwest Florida that's caught the attention of general manager Jon Daniels.

Texas is reportedly hot on the trail of Tampa Bay Rays starter Matt Moore, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times, who notes three-to-four other teams are expected to join the pursuit.

Moore has had a rocky comeback from Tommy John surgery though he has shown signs of returning to the All-Star pitcher that won 17 games in 2013. The 27-year-old owns a 4.67 ERA and 1.32 WHIP over 16 starts this season, but has pitched to a 2.36 ERA over his last four outings and most recently tossed seven shutout innings against the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday.

Moore is under a very team-friendly contract that sees him earn $5 million this season. There's a $7 million team option for 2017, $9 million team option for 2018, and $10 million team option in 2019.

The Rangers are currently without Yu Darvish, Derek Holland, and Colby Lewis, who are all on the disabled list.

Despite all the injuries, the Rangers are winners of four of their last five games and have stretched their lead in the division to nine games over the Houston Astros.
