Edinson Volquez will never forget George Springer.
The Houston Astros put up nine runs in the first inning against the Kansas City Royals on Friday, led by Springer, who had an inning to remember.
In his first at-bat, Springer drilled a leadoff triple to kick off the drubbing. When the Astros batted around, he came back up with the bases loaded, and he hammered a grand slam for his second hit of the inning.
Here's a breakdown of what Volquez had to endure:
Player | Result |
---|---|
Springer | Triple |
Gonzalez | RBI Single |
Altuve | Single |
Correa | Fielder's Choice |
Rasmus | RBI Single |
Gomez | RBI Single |
Valbuena | Walk |
Gattis | Reached on Error |
Castro | RBI Single |
Springer | Grand Slam |
Gonzalez | Groundout |
Altuve | Groundout |
The last player with a triple and a grand slam in the same inning was Brandon Inge, who achieved the mark in 2004, according to ESPN. Springer also becomes the first leadoff hitter to hit a grand slam in the first inning since Danny Tartabull did it in 1986.
