Wilpon: Mets 'need to do something' soon

After dropping Sunday's series finale with the Atlanta Braves to cap a three-game sweep at the hands of the worst team in the National League, New York Mets manager Terry Collins suggested changes were looming for his scuffling club, telling reporters "we may shake some things up."
Jeff Wilpon, the club's chief operating officer, wants general manager Sandy Alderson to get shaking soon. If the Mets wait until the trade deadline to make a move, he said, it may be too late.
"I think we might need to do something before that, because the deadline is still four-to-six weeks away," Wilpon told ESPN's Adam Rubin on Monday. "We've got to start playing better baseball now."
Though the reigning NL champs got off to a strong start in 2016, going 15-7 in the month of April, health problems have ravaged the Mets of late. Amid injuries to David Wright, Lucas Duda, Travis d'Arnaud, and Juan Lagares, the Mets have gone 21-25 since the beginning of May, and were overtaken by the Miami Marlins for second in the NL East on Sunday.
Alderson has added some veterans to his 25-man roster in recent weeks to help mitigate the absences of Wright and Duda. The Mets acquired first baseman James Loney from San Diego in late May and got Kelly Johnson from Atlanta 10 days later, but New York's offense continues to flounder. Since the calendar flipped to June, the Mets are tied for last in the NL with 56 runs scored, and the team's injury-riddled lineup is hitting just .241/.310/.395 (93 wRC+) over that span.
Still, despite the Mets' recent woes at the plate, Alderson offered a vague response when asked if he'd be as aggressive at this year's trade deadline as he was in 2015, when he acquired Yoenis Cespedes, Tyler Clippard, Juan Uribe, and Johnson.
"Will we be as aggressive? I don't know the answer to that at this point," Alderson told MLB.com's Trevor Provost-Heron. "Are we able to be as aggressive? I still think we have the prospects, if necessary, in our system to move and from a financial standpoint, I also think we have the means necessary, but we'll have to see what happens late in July."
