The group stage of the Copa America Centenario is coming to its conclusion, with Ecuador advancing to the quarter-finals out of Group B, joined not by the mighty Brazil but instead by Peru, who defeated the Selecao 1-0 courtesy of a deliberate hand-ball goal.

Los Incas recorded their first win over Brazil in 31 years and did so in controversial fashion as Raul Ruidiaz punched the ball into the back of the net, forcing referee Andres Cunha into making a tough decision. He and his assistants convened and attempted to make clear a murky situation but in the end, the call was well and truly wrong.

The hand-ball went uncalled and Brazil suffered its karmic fate, having had an equally-clear goal by Ecuador ruled out in the opening fixture of Group B.

Despite the controversial nature of the team's exit, Dunga will still come under fire as his team looked uninspired for large stretches of the match.

And while the onus to win was on Peru - a 0-0 draw good enough for Brazil to finish top of the group - one has to wonder how the result would have looked if Brazil had pushed itself a little more in the opening hour of play.

There has never been a clearer shout for video replay technology. Brazil will certainly lead the charge in that regard.

But take out the controversy of a hand-ball goal - had Ruidiaz scored with his chest or his foot, Brazil would have been eliminated in utterly embarrassing fashion.

As it stands, Ecuador alone will don yellow and blue from Group B in the knockout stage, having qualified in second place automatically after defeating Haiti 4-0.

Ecuador meets Colombia in the quarter-finals.

La Tricolor moves on to the next stage of the competition after missing out on the knockout rounds in the 2015 Copa America, eliminated from Group A by eventual winner Chile and surprise underdog Bolivia.

Ecuador's Valencia boys both found the back of the net against Haiti, Enner Valencia notching the first goal of the game and Antonio Valencia - of no relation - rounded the match off with his 78th minute effort.

Ecuador's task is significantly easier, since they'll be travelling to Seattle to take on the United States on June 16. Ecuador's players will be confident that a win over the host nation is certainly achievable; the United States has sized up Ecuador in similar light.

On Monday, Mexico and Venezuela battle it out for the top spot in Group C, with both teams having already advanced to the next stage of the competition; then, Uruguay battles Jamaica for nothing but pride as the two sides, already eliminated, look to pick up their first positive result in the tournament.
