Washington State quarterback Peyton Bender has been ruled academically ineligible for the 2016 season, Jacob Thorpe of The Spokesman-Review reports.

Bender, the primary backup to prolific passer Luke Falk, appeared in five games last season and started in the Apple Cup versus Washington while filling in for a banged up Falk.

As a redshirt freshman in 2015, Bender threw for 498 yards with three touchdowns and four picks.

Without his services in 2016, the Cougars will likely let redshirt freshman Tyler Hilinski and junior college transfer Anthony Gordon battle for the backup job.
