Report: Baylor yet to grant releases to waiting recruits

Jerome Miron / USA TODAY Sports

At least six incoming freshmen have asked Baylor to release them from their letters of intent in wake of the school's sexual assault scandal, but the program is showing no indications it will comply.

Despite multiple attempts to secure a release, including an in-person meeting with interim coach Jim Grobe and defensive coordinator Phil Bennett, defensive back Parrish Cobb is still bound to the Bears.

"Bennett told us that we'd have to follow through with the appeal process," Collis Cobb, Parrish's father, told FOX Sports' Bruce Feldman. "What I took from that is they're not going to release anybody."

Collis added that Grobe told them he can't sign off on a release by himself. The Cobb family is seeking assistance from the Big 12 compliance office, and is waiting to hear back from someone in the department after leaving a voicemail. Baylor is supposed to have 30 days to respond to each request for a release.

"I'm very surprised that it has come to this," Collis said. "My son didn't ask for any of this. He wasn't at Baylor when all these incidents happened. He just wants to move forward."

Parrish isn't the only Bears recruit in limbo. A handful of other incoming freshmen, including J.P. Urquidez, Jared Atkinson, Kameron Martin, Donovan Duvernay, and Patrick Hudson, are also awaiting their releases and may not contact other schools until they obtain it.

"We're trying to keep each other posted," said Collis, who noted he's been in touch with Urquidez's father. "As parents, we're trying to stick together."
