Angels GM: We haven't gotten any calls about Trout

The Los Angeles Angels have a grocery list of problems this season.

The Angels now have 10 players on the disabled list, including four starters and a shortstop, while sitting fourth in the American League West.

So typically, in the world of baseball, when a team begins to slip out of contention, some of its top players become available on the trade market for a substantial return.

In recent memory, that was the case when the surging 2015 version of the Toronto Blue Jays acquired Troy Tulowitzki from the Colorado Rockies in exchange for Jose Reyes, the big name in the trade. The Blue Jays also acquired David Price from the Detroit Tigers for top prospect Daniel Norris.

For Los Angeles, the big name is Mike Trout. So how many calls has Angels general manager Billy Eppler gotten?

"None," he told the Los Angeles Times' Bill Shakin.

That's right, not a single team has picked up the phone to inquire about a trade for the superstar because, frankly, it doesn't make any sense for either side, according to former executives.

If the Angels were ever to deal Trout, it would have to be for roughly five players who are the frontline of a trade partner's farm system. The Angels' crop of minor-league prospects is weak, so that's likely the minimum asking price.

But even then, there's no guarantee the return will be worth in the future what Trout is worth now.

"It's tough to take five guys and expect all five guys to be really good players," said Logan White, the Los Angeles Dodgers' former scouting director. "You might get their top five guys, and one is an everyday player, and the rest are just cup-of-coffee guys."

So what exactly are the odds Los Angeles trades away the biggest impact guy the organization has ever seen?

"I'd say there is a 95 percent chance the Angels have no interest in trading him," a big-league GM said, "and a 99 percent chance that a team would not have both the payroll space and the prospect cachet to make it worth the Angels' while."
