Wolfsburg terminates Nicklas Bendtner's contract

VfL Wolfsburg has ended a miserable 20-month stay for Nicklas Bendtner at the Volkswagen Arena, terminating his contract with immediate effect.

The insolent Dane mustered 47 appearances up front for the club claiming nine goals, and had been excused from training from March 30 as Die Wolfe sought a resolution to Bendtner's ill-disciplined and languid spell in Lower Saxony.

"Both Nicklas and ourselves had high hopes of his engagement at VfL Wolfsburg, but after two years, we have had to ascertain that the expectations were neither fulfilled for him nor for us and a continued cooperation made no sense for either side," club director of sport Klaus Allofs stated.

"For that reason, the mutual decision to end our association prematurely is thus the best solution for all parties. We wish Nicklas all the very best for his future career."

Bendtner's playing career has been marred by failing to match up to his apparent high opinion of himself. He was rumoured to have scored 10 out of nine on a self-confidence test during his time at Arsenal, and six-and-a-half years ago predicted that by now he would've been Premier League top scorer and considered world class.

The 28-year-old's next hope of professional football appears to be Denmark's visit of Bosnia & Herzegovina in an international friendly on June 3.
