Cleveland Indians right-hander Carlos Carrasco had to be helped off the field in the third inning of Sunday's series finale against the Detroit Tigers after suffering a left hamstring injury on an awkward play at first base.

With one out in the bottom of the third, the 29-year-old ran to cover first on a ground ball off the bat of Andrew Romine, and appeared to roll his left ankle just before reaching the bag. Though he was able to corral the toss from Carlos Santana and step on first for the out, Carrasco immediately started writhing in pain and was unable to put any weight on his left leg as he was helped off the field and into the clubhouse.

Shortly after he was replaced by right-hander Trevor Bauer, the Indians announced that Carrasco had injured his hamstring.

Indians manager Terry Francona spoke with reporters after the contest, and said Carrasco would head back to Cleveland to undergo an MRI and the hurler would be going on the disabled list.

Heading into Sunday's outing at Comerica Park, Carrasco had managed a 2.79 ERA and 1.03 WHIP through three starts this season, notching 18 strikeouts while issuing five walks in his first 19 1/3 innings.
