Boise State official to Baylor: 'No student conduct records' for Sam Ukwuachu

A Boise State official told a Baylor official in Oct. 2013 that there were no student conduct records for former player Sam Ukwuachu while he was with the Broncos.

The former defensive end was sentenced to 180 days in jail and 10 years of felony probation for sexually assaulting a former Baylor student.

Ukwuachu's former girlfriend at Boise State testified at his sexual assault trial to their alleged abusive relationship before his transfer to the Bears, which includes an incident where he punched a window and had to receive medical treatment.

Amid questions about how the Ukwuachu situation was handled, Bears head coach Art Briles maintains that he was not informed of Ukwuachu's violent past while with the Broncos. Former Boise State head coach Chris Peterson released a statement contradicting Briles' claims, saying that Briles had full knowledge of the situation from a phone call that took place between the two head coaches.

While the content of that phone call may never be known, documents obtained by Texas Monthly appear to support Briles' statement of ignorance, detailing an exchange between the Boise State dean of students and Baylor's associate dean for student conduct.

In an Oct. 23, 2013 email, Baylor's Bethany McCraw asked the Boise State dean of students: "Can you confirm that Mr. Ukwuachu was not suspended or expelled from Boise State University for any reason and is thus eligible to immediately return?"

Boise State's Christian Wuthrich responded Nov. 4, 2013: "We have no student conduct records for Samuel and he is in good standing with Boise State."

Briles also released a form through a spokesman to show that Boise State's compliance office checked "No" when asked if Ukwuachu was "suspended or disqualified for disciplinary reasons."

Baylor announced Friday that they would be launching an internal investigation into how the Ukwuachu situation was handled.
