Wisconsin's Stave 'not hurt' despite being ruled out indefinitely with shoulder injury

Jeff Hanisch / USA Today

There are some mixed messages coming from the Wisconsin football program about quarterback Joel Stave's status.

In a statement released on Tuesday, head coach Gary Andersen said Stave was ruled out indefinitely due to a shoulder injury. Andersen then complicated matters later in the day by saying his backup pivot isn't actually injured.

Here's what Andersen had to say, via Bucky's 5th Quarter:

In case you're confused by the contradictory comments, here's Andersen's first response in writing:

"In practice, Joel is at practice, he's at meetings, he's in all scenarios as far as that stuff goes. As far as game-prepping at this point, that's where Joel is not with us completely 100 percent all the time. He's at practice all the time; I don't want anybody to say he's not practicing, he's not with us, because that's not the case. When Joel feels that he can do that, Joel will be right back in that process."

Okay, so he's at practice, but he's not practicing. Makes sense so far.

"I also want to make it real clear there's been no re-injury for Joel whatsoever."

So, if there's "been no re-injury", he's not injured, right?

"He has not re-injured anything. When he gets himself to the point where he's ready to play, he'll be ready to play. 'Injured' is probably a bad word, I guess, of choice by me that I decided to use in the press release."

Stave wasn't initially available to speak to reporters, but he eventually met the media to clear things up:

Now let's look at Stave's comments again:

"I'm not hurt. Structurally, everything's good in my shoulder. I'm throwing the ball after practice, and everything like that, just fine. Right now, my arm is just not working the way I'd like it to, I guess. I don't know what it is."

So, to recap: Stave says he's "not hurt", Andersen says there has been "no re-injury for Joel whatsoever", and the team has ruled him out indefinitely.

This story is only getting more bizarre.
