Texas A&M win costs furniture store more than $1 million in sales

Texas A&M's 52-28 upset win over South Carolina on Thursday night was great news for everybody in College Station. Everyone except the local Ashley Furniture, that is.

The furniture store offered a tantalizing promotion to Aggies fans from Aug. 16 through Aug 27. Any furniture purchased during that period would be free if Texas A&M beat the Gamecocks by 10 or more points. That didn't seem all that likely with South Carolina a heavy favorite, but the 24-point win for the Aggies will prove costly.

According to ESPN's Darren Rovell, more than 600 people bought furniture over that span for a total cost of over $1 million.

"We've wanted to do this for three of four years now," store owner Mark Wilks told Rovell. "This was really good for us."

The reason it's so good for Wilks is that the store took out an insurance policy to cover the potential loss. It will result in Wilks paying back about 15 per cent of the total sales while the insurance company will cover the other 85.

"We're going to have a big check-writing party at the store," Wilks said.
